Week 4: Performance Task
Talking About Coronavirus to Children
Hello kids! How are you doing?
I am Kuya Earl. Do you know what I’m wearing on my face? Yes, this is a facemask and face shield. These things are essential to prevent us from catching various diseases due to viruses.
And these viruses are the reason why we can’t play with our friends outside. It’s because of something sneaky called the coronavirus or covid - 19. Have you heard the same thing? I thought so. Let’s investigate!
A few months ago, something started to make people sick. Scientists investigated hmmm... They looked through their microscopes and found CORONAVIRUS!!
Coronavirus is a tiny virus that looks like it’s wearing a crown. Viruses are a type of germ. They're very tiny, and when they get inside your body, they can make you sick. This virus is the one that caused the pandemic in 2020. A pandemic is a new disease that spreads all over the world and affects many people.
Have you ever caught a cold or the flu? You might have a virus! When someone is sick with coronavirus, they might have a sore throat, a cough, or a fever. You kids can get sick too, but most don’t feel sick at all! But some people, like your grandparents, can get so sick they have to go to the hospital to feel better!
Coronavirus sneaks around in teeny tiny drops of water from someone’s coughs or sneezes. It can hide on things like tables, chairs, doorknobs, or even in your clothes, waiting for someone to pick it up. It even hitched a ride around the world!
But I have a secret, shhh… *whispers* We can stop Coronavirus together! We just need to use our superpowers! Yess!!
Our first superpower is staying at home as much as we can. Are you doing that? If you stay at home, then, the virus won’t be able to jump onto you, your friend, or your family members!
Our second superpower is our elbows! That’s a place where we should trap our coughs and sneezes. Like this kid (demonstrate the example). This way, we won’t spray little viruses into the air that might make someone else sick.
And last, of all, Coronavirus has a super-secret weakness. *whispers* It’s scared of soap and water. So what’s our third superpower? You’re right! It’s washing our hands. We need to wash our hands for 20 seconds or while singing the Happy Birthday song twice. Through washing our hands, the material that envelops the virus is broken so the virus dies. So we should wash it after we go outside after we use the bathroom after we play with our toys and gadgets, and before and after we eat.
Lastly, we have armor to protect ourselves from the coronavirus. It is the facemask and face shields. We should always wear it wherever we go. But remember, if you use a mask, be careful not to touch it once you’ve put it on. The mask should cover your mouth and nose and the face shield must cover your whole face. Like this kid (demonstrate the example). You can ask your parents to help you in putting on those things. Also, we should avoid touching our faces, and keep a safe distance from others to protect ourselves and them.
Don’t be afraid to ask your parents about anything you want to know about the virus. They are your allies in this battle. So! If we all stay home, cover our coughs, wash our hands, and wear face masks and face shields, we can beat coronavirus together! Don’t be scared, be safe! Have a nice day kids! Bye
